Who doesn’t love waking up to the pop of a soda can or the smell of freshly brewed coffee? While this can be just a part of our daily routine, it is something we should occasionally check in with.

Caffeine serves many purposes and is a popular waiting area amenity – one can find a cup of joe or their favorite soda at any local doctor’s office, community clinic or full-service hospital. Whether it is in the form of an automated soda dispenser or a full-service coffeehouse – anxious family members, visitors, and staff reach for the comfort of caffeine to push through the wee morning hours. Caffeine has become an integral part of our society’s social etiquette that many community healthcare facilities are incorporating full-service cafes. Houston Methodist Baytown Outpatient Center recently incorporated a Starbucks café within the main lobby.

While caffeine provides some health benefits, it is important to moderate consumption to avoid any adverse side effects. The average adult can handle approximately, 400 mg of caffeine each day or about four cups of coffee. Since caffeine can be hidden in food, gum, and medicine we consume such as chocolate, oatmeal, and over-the-counter pain relievers, it is important to read labels. These hidden doses of caffeine can cause insomnia, restlessness, or fast heartbeat according to the Mayo Clinic.
