Sarah McCommon’s journey to joining the Christopher Kelly Leadership Development Program (CKLDP) exemplifies the transformative power of mentorship and the exploration of one’s career paths. “At the beginning of my career, I thought we would all be just architects. When I joined PhiloWilke, it was the first time I was involved in discussions about career path options, and I was encouraged to find what was my strength within the architectural profession.”
Initially uncertain about her career trajectory upon joining the firm, Sarah found herself drawn to opportunities for personal growth and leadership development. Through her involvement with PhiloWilke’s internal mentor program, Sarah unearthed her passion for mentoring and supporting others. Her decision to apply for the Christopher Kelly Leadership Development Program was driven by a mix of factors, including the insightful guidance of her co-workers and the culture of opportunity-sharing fostered by PhiloWilke. Despite initially considering the program two years prior, Sarah determined to postpone applying. As her personal and work tasks aligned with her newfound clarity and determination to seize the opportunity for growth and self-discovery, she took the leap to join the program.
Entering a new program or initiative can often feel like stepping into the unknown, but we usually find our most significant growth in challenging ourselves. Sarah McCommon was one of sixteen scholars selected for the 2023-2024 class. Over 9 months, the CKLDP offered the scholars an opportunity to embark on a transformative journey, fostering personal and professional development.
The CKLDP stands out with its unique blend of structure and dynamism in its curriculum. It covers a diverse range of topics crucial for comprehensive growth in the architectural profession, from entrepreneurship and business management to community engagement, and DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion). One key feature of the CKLDP is its emphasis on participant engagement and empowerment. Unlike traditional lecture-style programs, CKLDP sessions are planned and developed by the scholars to be interactive, encouraging dialogue and collaboration among groups. The program’s unique approach allows participants to shape the direction of discussions based on their interests and needs, fostering a sense of ownership and investment in the learning process. This empowerment is a key driver of the program. It inspires architects to take control of their education and practice planning for a diverse group of individuals outside of their workplace hierarchy.
One of Sarah’s particularly memorable sessions was the art of negotiation and closing the deal workshop. The session provided practical skills and insights into the art of effective communication and collaboration. “The activity showcased the dynamics of negotiation, including ethical considerations, and sparked valuable discussions on different tactics employed. Overall, it was an engaging and insightful experience that underscored the essence of leadership and teamwork. It was a lot of fun to watch how the teams worked together and how invested some were in winning.”
Another standout session explored the intersection of architecture and emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence. Participants engaged in thought-provoking discussions on the ethical implications of AI (Artificial Intelligence) in the workforce, shedding light on the evolving landscape of the profession. However, Sarah’s most beneficial session was the one she had planned with her team partner. In the final session, they worked in tandem to craft a workshop focused on “The Future of You.” Between scouting for a venue and interviewing speakers, the duo coordinated an intriguing and thought-provoking session led by Out of Architecture; a firm focused on helping classically trained architects understand the career paths available to them.
Beyond the structured sessions, the CKLDP fosters a keen sense of community and camaraderie among participants. For many, the program serves as a gateway to expanding their professional network and forging meaningful connections within the industry. “We found support and encouragement from fellow architects, breaking down barriers and dispelling the notion of competition”. The program’s blend of structured learning, interactive sessions, and community engagement empowers architects to unlock their full potential and become catalysts for positive change within the profession. This transformative aspect of the CKLDP is what makes it so exciting and promising for architects, instilling a sense of hope and anticipation for their future growth.
As Sarah reflects on her experience, it’s clear that the program has left an indelible mark, instilling newfound confidence and a sense of purpose in her and her fellow program scholars. With each session attended and connection made, the group stepped forward toward personal and professional excellence. The CKLDP’s impact is profound, reaching far beyond the boundaries of its curriculum. When asked about her most valuable takeaway from the program, Sarah shared, “I emerged from the program with a newfound confidence and a broader perspective on my role as a leader.” By embracing vulnerability and pushing past their comfort zones, participants uncover boundless potential within themselves.
For those considering joining the CKLDP, the application process may seem daunting at first glance. However, the program’s accessibility and support throughout the application journey help to ease the stress of crafting your response. Focusing on authenticity and self-reflection, the application process catalyzes personal growth and introspection.
