These hot summer months bring with them thoughts of ocean breezes, poolside napping, and sipping on a cold glass of lemonade. Hold that mental image because summer is also a time to be wary of dehydration, or the lack of sufficient water in the body.
The best way to avoid dehydration is to drink BEFORE you get thirsty. In most cases, water is best. Make sure this summer you mix in some water between those refreshing lemonades or poolside cocktails.
Water is important to the body, but especially in warm weather. When you exercise, your muscles generate heat; water keeps them from overheating. To keep your body running at optimal speed, your body needs to get rid of that heat. Your body primarily discards heat in warm weather through sweat. The evaporation of sweat cools the body and tissues beneath. Sweating reduces the body’s water level leading to dehydration which affects normal bodily functions.
Here are tips for staying hydrated:
- Understand the signs of dehydration
- Know how much water you need to consume every day
- Make drinking a glass of water part of your normal routine
- Carry a water bottle
- Try unsweetened sparkling water or flavor your water by adding fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs
- Track your water intake using an app
- Choose hydrating snacks, such as cucumbers, celery, strawberries or watermelon
- Distribute your water intake throughout the day (playing catch up at the end of the day doesn’t negate the fact that you were dehydrated all day)
