The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center has expanded their inpatient capacity at Alkek Tower in the Medical Center. Floors 20, 21, and 22, each at 47,300 square feet, were constructed as part of a vertical expansion project but left as shell space for future build-out. The PhiloWilke Partnership and Linbeck design-build team’s scope of responsibility consisted of finishing these floors – similar to but improving upon the existing inpatient layout on floors 15 through 19. Through study of the existing spaces and discussion about function and work flow, substantial design improvements were incorporated to enhance staff efficiency and patient comfort. New infrastructure includes patient rooms, support areas, consultation space and family waiting areas.
